On Tuesday, January 19, 2021, loving son, brother, uncle and friend, Bernie Benavides, passed away at the age of 51, after a brief illness. He passed on peacefully surrounded by his family.
Bernie was born in Taft, TX on May 4, 1969. He graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in 1987. He attended the University of Texas in San Antonio and earned his Bachelor Degree in Political Science from Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. He served on the board of the San Patricio Municipal Water District for several years. As a child, Bernie served as an alter server for many years at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gregory, TX.
Bernie was a compassionate free spirit with a soft spot for animals and people down on their luck. Bernie loved to talk politics, the outdoors, surfing, fishing, and enjoyed listening to his music. He had many friends and relatives who loved and cared for him.
Bernie is preceded in death by his grandparents Gaudencio and Gregoria Benavides, and Esteban and Francisca Gomez.
Bernie is survived by his parents, Ismael and Petra Benavides; brother Bennie (Norma Rodriguez) Benavides; sisters, Bonnie (Mark) Trevino and Brenda (Jose) Hernandez; and nephews, Randy, Jeremy, and Marky Trevino.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 23rd, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Gregory, TX. Visitation will begin at 10:00am with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 11:30am. A funeral mass will be held at 12:00pm with a committal service to follow at the Gregory Cemetery.
