Donald William Atkins passed away peacefully the morning of September 24, 2022 at Mirador Retirement Community in Corpus Christi, Texas. Donald was 87 years old.
Don was born in Sheridan Township, Minnesota on April 8, 1935 to William Clarence and Thelma Atkins. Don was a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, having served from June 27, 1953 to September 12, 1976 with overseas duty in Okinawa and Morocco. He Attained the rank of Master Chief. Upon retirement from the Navy, he opened his own business, D & M Major Appliance Repair in Ingleside, Texas.
Don was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church, most recently as a parishioner at St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic Church. He loved the beauty of God's green earth and he always took the time to admire sunsets. Don enjoyed camping with his family throughout the United States. He was an avid dancer his whole life including country and wester, round and square dancing.
Don is survived by his wife, Marylin Atkins, his children Denise (David) Gray, Ronald Atkins, Robert (Nancy) Atkins and Michelle Atkins, his grandchildren, Joshua Gray, Kayla (Stuart) Vandercooi and Dylan Gray, his sister-in-laws Shirley Krautbauer, Carol Atkins and Carolyn Atkins and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and friends.
Don is preceded in death by his siblings, Rosemary (Don) Macholda, Richard Atkins, Clarence (Mary Ann) Atkins, and Norman Atkins.
We are most appreciative for the compassion and care provided by the staff at Mirador Retirement Community. Everyone who remembers Don is asked to celebrate his life in their own special way.
A Memorial Service in honor of Don will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic Church, beginning with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 10:30 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow immediately thereafter at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery after a full military honors ceremony.
