Rockport, Texas - Dorothy Anne Carroll (nee Helmick), 95, died October 27 at her home in Rockport of natural causes, in the loving care of family and friends. She was known to everyone as Dottie.
Dottie was born February 3, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, to William Trainor Helmick and Willa DeEtte Helmick (nee Eckberg). She lived most of her life in Southern California before moving to Missouri and then Texas.
Dottie worked many years as a waitress at the famous Hollywood restaurant Schwab's Pharmacy on Sunset Boulevard before moving into the grocery industry both there and in Texas. She worked for 27 years at the H.E.B. Supermarket in Portland, Texas, retiring at age 90. She made many lifetime friends there.
Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Slatton, known as Whip. She and Whip were longtime members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3904 in Rockport.
She is survived by her son Donald Campbell and his wife Christine Walsh, of Moultonborough, New Hampshire, three step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren, as well as her closest friends Rick and Violet Luton of Rockport, who cared for her in her declining years.
Final arrangements were entrusted to All Faith Cremation & Funeral Services. Due to the current pandemic, a Celebration of Life will be held on a date to be determined
