George Michael Dowe, age 71, passed away on November 30, 2022, at Harbor Hospice in Portland, TX.
George was born on November 19, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, to Elijah and Harriet Dowe. He grew up on Staten Island and had two sisters, Patricia Charles and Jackie Bianco, both deceased.
George joined the US Navy at age 17 and served in Vietnam. He served on small craft in Groton, CT and Guantanamo Bay Cuba. He was stationed on minesweepers in Charleston, SC, San Diego, CA, and Ingleside, TX. He was a plank owner on the minesweeper USS Sentry. After a career of over 25 years, he retired in 1996 as a Senior Chief Boatswain Mate from Navy Recruitment District Houston.
George lived in Portland, TX until his death. George married Teresa Bruce, on July 9, 1977 in Groton, CT. They were married for 45 years. The couple had 2 sons and 3 grandchildren.
George is survived by his wife, Teresa, sons, William (wife Christina), Lucas (Elizabeth Pruneda) and grandchildren, Walker, Ella, and Ethan.
George was a friend of Bill W. for the last 16 years of his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Fair winds and following seas my love.
