Joseph Allan Custer died peacefully in the early morning hours of October 15th. He was born, in Alice, Texas, on September 29, 1939. After graduating from W. B Ray High School, Allan went onto Texas A & I in Kingsville where he received his degree in history and education in 1962. He then married the love of his life, Donna Myrle Gaines on January 26, 1963, and he accepted his first teaching job in Petronila, Texas.
The couple had two daughters while in Petronila, Lori Allyson and Shelley Dyan. Allan then moved his family to Corpus Christi in 1970. Due to Hurricane Celia, Allan then worked construction rebuilding the city. Allan accepted a job teaching at Tuloso Midway Jr. High School and he and Donna welcomed their son, Daniel Scott. Allan was meant to have his career paths merge. That is when he attended Texas State University, received his vocational license and began teaching vocational construction trades. He successfully taught that program for twenty years. He also managed a private contracting business. His wife, Donna, passed away in 2001. Allan then married Betty Kay Lindley in 2015.
Allan was an avid gardener, supplying his family and area neighborhood with vegetables and citrus. He and his son collected football and baseball cards. He served as camp director each summer at Waltonia in Ingram, Texas. He never met a critter he didn't like. He was a deacon at City Church in Corpus Christi. He spent his later years devoted to Christ and the church.
Allan was preceded in death by his wife, Donna and his wife, Kay. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Jackson (Jay) and Nanie Mae (Nancy) Custer.
He is survived by his brothers, Calvin Donald Custer (Jolene, Conroe, Texas) and John Robert Custer (Monte Alto, New Mexico). He is also survived by his children Lori (Tom Rogers, Greensboro, NC), Shelley (Corpus Christi), and Daniel (San Antonio, Texas) and his grandsons Aaron Matthew Cox and Taylor Allen Hall. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 11:00 AM at City Church, 4425 South Staples, Corpus Christi, Texas. There will be a reception immediately following.
