Sofia Hernandez Tamez went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on January 7th, 2025.
She was born August 23, 1932 in Norias, TX, part of the King Ranch. Sofia was 92 years old and at home in Rockport TX at the time of her death.
Sofia was proud of her Kineño heritage and growing up in Norias. She moved to Raymondville, TX, after being wed to Gilbert D. Tamez in 1952. Her husband's employment eventually landed her in Mesquite, TX where they lived for over 30 years. Sofia and Gilbert raised their four children while residing in Mesquite.
Sofia earned her GED while residing in Mesquite After gaining increased responsibility, and career growth during her 27 years at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, TX, she retired. She moved to Rockport with her husband in 1998 after they both retired. Sofia and Gilbert were faithful members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockport. She was devoted to her faith, her husband, and her family.
Sofia was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert D. Tamez, her parents, Guadalupe and Petra Hernandez, her brothers Augustin (Enriqueta) Hernandez, Heriberto (Olivia) Hernandez, Guadalupe (Celia) Hernandez, and sisters Eulalia (Jose Maria) Hernandez, Ramona (Jose) Solis, and Yolanda (Bonifacio) Lopez.
She is survived by her children Alfred (Barbara Doering) Tamez of Gun Barrel City, TX, Gilbert G. Tamez of Rockport TX, Gary (Heidi) Tamez of Bay City, Michigan, Leticia (Monty Brecheen) Tamez of Rockport, TX; grandchildren Jason Tamez, Shanna (Brad) Kolp, Emily Tamez, Clarissa Tamez, Travis (Vanessa) Tamez; great-grandchildren Tyson Curtis, Seth Curtis, Wesley Tamez, and Sophia Lynn Kolp. Also surviving her are her sister, Maria Cruz of Diboll, Texas, and brother, Gavino (Mary) Hernandez of Lyford, Texas, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Sofia's life will be on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockport, TX. The celebration will commence with a eulogy at 8:45 AM followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:15 AM. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.
Interment will be held at Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi, TX at 2:00 PM, Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, where she will be united with her husband and life partner, Gilbert D. Tamez, in a private ceremony.
Sofia was known as Mamaw or Gumpy to her grandkids, Sofie or Sofia to her friends. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
